In 1970, Lefty Phillips, in his first complete year as manager of the California Angels, led the team to an 86-76 record, matching their best performance to date. Prior to managing, Phillips had a lengthy tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers, serving as a pitching coach and scout from 1951 to 1968. He took over the Angels' managerial role in May 1969, succeeding Bill Rigney.
