Carolina Panthers legend Steve Smith Sr. may be a California boy at heart. But there’s no doubt that heart has plenty of room for his adopted home. - On Thursday afternoon, the franchise’s all-time leader receiver—in a collaborative effort led by the Steve Smith Family Foundation and Mecklenburg County—announced plans to establish the city’s first behavioral urgent care facility. The clinic, which is expected to open next January, will serve as an immediate 24/7 provider of mental health and substance abuse needs. - “It is not what you do publicly. It is what you do privately,” Smith said at the county’s budget retreat. “Privately, I want to honor my wife and I want to honor my children and I want to continue to honor my city that has adopted me. That is my purpose, and when they lay me in the ground here, I want to leave a legacy on this city the same way that they’ve changed the legacy for my family for generations.” - - Here's details on the services the behavioral health urgent care facility will provide. It will be located at 616 Colonnade Drive in east Charlotte #MeckBOCC pic.twitter.com/PefIjkuHIr - — Joe Bruno (@JoeBrunoWSOC9) January 27, 2022 - - - As also noted by WSOC-TV reporter Joe Bruno, Smith has been a strong supporter of domestic violence prevention and mental health awareness. This latest initiative from 89 proves that no matter when he’s ultimately immortalized for his football career in Canton, Ohio, he’s already left a lasting impact for the city and folks he played for in Charlotte, N.C. - - RelatedSteve Smith Sr. congratulates Sam Mills on being named Hall of Fame finalist - - RelatedJeremy Chinn Week 16 jersey watch: Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith Sr. - - List - - Panthers' final 2021 statistical leaders - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
