When you’re in the middle of a rebuild like the Carolina Panthers are, there’s still work to be done. And if you’re in the middle of a rebuild that just took a damaging step back, well, go grab your hard hats and pack a lunch. - On Monday, Pro Football Focus pinpointed each team’s most pressing needs heading into the 2022 offseason. Analyst Anthony Treash, in his piece, attributed three particular areas awaiting improvement for Carolina. Want to take a wild stab in the dark at what they are? - If you guessed quarterback would be one, then come claim your prize! - “Carolina is in a tough spot. Quarterback Sam Darnold failed to revive his career with a new team in 2021, finishing with the second-lowest grade among quarterbacks,” Treash writes. “The Cam Newton reunion also went badly — the once-NFL MVP posted a 46.5 passing grade for Carolina in 2021. Signing a veteran signal-caller is just going to keep the team in quarterback purgatory. The Panthers do own the No. 6 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but they have no other picks in the top 100. If they want to provide an ounce of hope at the position, they need to take a shot on one of the top prospects at the position with that top-10 selection.” - In the least surprising bit of analysis in modern times, he also included the team’s offensive line. That, of course, is no development—as the Panthers rolled out 12 different starting combinations to very little success in 2021. - As the third, Treash noted the linebacker position. In addition to their lack of depth they carried throughout the campaign, Carolina may be watching two of its starters in Haason Reddick and Jermaine Carter Jr. walk away in free agency. - Let’s see what general manager Scott Fitterer and head coach Matt Rhule can now do with six draft picks—none of which are slated for day two—and just over $17 million in cap space. - - RelatedPanthers hire James Campen as new offensive line coach - - RelatedPanthers pass on 2022's best prospect in new CBS mock draft? - - List - - Panthers 2022 NFL mock draft 1.0: End of January edition - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
