The Carolina Panthers have had an eventful go at revamping much of their coaching staff this offseason, and you can probably guess why. - Joseph Person of The Athletic hopped on FOX Sports Upstate’s Game On with Richmond and John on Friday to discuss, of a few topics, the team’s fluctuating backbone. Between coaches steering away from the Panthers’ open jobs and in-house assistants leaving town for the same roles elsewhere, Person stated that there’s a perception within the league that Matt Rhule is on very unstable ground. - “There were coaches on staff, there were coaches that Matt Rhule wanted to bring in here and talk to like a Thomas McGaughey and a Pep Hamilton that viewed this situation as a lame duck situation and didn’t want any part of it,” Person said. - Hamilton, an early target for the offensive coordinator position, reportedly turned Rhule away for an interview request. Similarly, McGaughey—the franchise’s former special teams coordinator—did not make a return to Carolina after the two sides couldn’t come to terms. - Rhule also saw three of his own leave for what they presumably believe are greener pastures. The Panthers—just this past week—lost wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson, defensive passing game coordinator Jason Simmons and offensive line assistant Tony Sparano Jr. all to lateral moves. - “That’s why we’ve seen three assistants leave,” he added. “That’s a reflection of Rhule some, but it’s also a reflection of the situation that David Tepper has painted—by not talking and giving the rest of the league the impression that this is a shaky place and don’t move your family here just to move them again in a year.” - Luckily for Rhule, he has been able to fill much of those voids with some well-respected and proven minds. But what’s the thing they say about looking, swimming and quacking like a duck . . . ? - - RelatedA reminder that Matt Rhule has final say over Panthers' roster decisionsPanthers HC Matt Rhule reportedly told Eli Apple he'd 'never play anywhere again' - - List - - Twitter reacts to Panthers' hiring of Steve Wilks - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
