Mike Mitchell might’ve spent just one year with the Carolina Panthers, but it was the best year of his NFL career. And with that career over, the former hard-hitting safety is starting a new one. - That journey will begin with the Indianapolis Colts, according to The Athletic‘s Stephen Holder, where he’s set to be hired as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach. The 34-year-old will now work under head coach Frank Reich and new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley—who was just named to his post on Tuesday. - Mitchell joined the Panthers for the 2013 campaign—signing a one-year, $1 million pact out of free agency. He’d go on to be an enforcer on the backend of the league’s second-ranked defense—a unit that allowed just 301.3 yards and 15.1 points per game. - The then 26-year-old safety recorded 66 tackles alongside career-highs in sacks (4.0) and interceptions (four). His standout campaign then helped him cash in with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a five-year, $25 million deal in 2014. - He wrapped up his playing days with Indianapolis following the 2018 season at the age of 31. - - RelatedDavid Tepper's silence may have hurt Panthers' search for QB, coachesPanthers bring back Steve Wilks to coach secondary - - List - - 6 Panthers greats who could be next for the Pro Football Hall of Fame - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
