When you’re in the position the Carolina Panthers are currently in, at least under center, the phrase “beggars can’t be choosers” comes to mind. And if it doesn’t, then it probably should in about two more seconds . . . - NFL Networkers Patrick Claybon, Cynthia Freuland and James Palmer recently discussed the team’s potential options at quarterback for this offseason. Palmer, after mentioning one of the prohibitive favorites in San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo, brings up the name of a guy who the Panthers actually tried their hand at during the regular season—Philadelphia Eagles backup Gardner Minshew. - “Gardner Minshew could be someone that you can also hear—maybe coming in to compete with Sam Darnold,” Palmer said. It’s a guy, remember, who they had interest in last year when Darnold got hurt and made some calls to Philadelphia. They’re looking at everything.” - Well, that’d certainly qualify as “everything.” - Known more affectionately for his . . . uh . . . unique aesthetic than his actual play, the former Jacksonville Jaguar made a pair of starts for the Eagles in 2021. Those outings saw the 25-year-old complete 39 of his 58 attempts (67.2 percent) for 428 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. - As Palmer mentioned the Panthers made an inquiry on Minshew following the shoulder injury to Darnold following the Week 9 loss to the New England Patriots. That story, however, saw Philadelphia turn away the interest for their second-stringer and Carolina turn back to franchise great Cam Newton. - So whatever ultimately happens at the position for the Panthers, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll get a weekly Zoolander-esque walk-off between the two fashion icons in Newton and Minshew. - - RelatedReport: Texans QB Deshaun Watson 'open-minded' toward PanthersPFF sends Vikings QB Kirk Cousins to Panthers in 'trade to watch out for' - - List - - 4 quarterbacks the Panthers should consider in free agency - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
