Given all they’ve been through over the past year, the Carolina Panthers certainly could use themselves a good laugh. So, they got one . . . reportedly. - Two weeks ago, a claim from the Purple Daily podcast connected the team with Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins—alleging Carolina made an inquiry into the three-time Pro Bowler. But Jonathan M. Alexander of The Charlotte Observer has sniffed out some opposition to that particular account, writing that the Panthers didn’t think much of the purported interest. - “. . . while there were reports that the Panthers inquired about Cousins in Minnesota, two sources said that call never occurred,” Alexander notes. “The coaching staff and front office were actually in a meeting when they heard the news and laughed it off.” - To be fair, they weren’t the only people who thought this was a bit comical. - While you can certainly do worse than Cousins, trading any potentially valuable resources for a largely mediocre 33-year-old who’s essentially on a one-year, $45 million deal would be an oddball move. Couple that with the fact that Carolina is already fairly limited when it comes to resources—money and draft picks, in particular—and you have a move that really doesn’t make much sense. - Cousins may be a serious prospect for someone else, perhaps a team with a contentious roster who’s a decent passer away from making noise. But for the Panthers, who have quite a few problems that still need solving, such a trade would likely end up on a blooper reel somewhere a few years from now. - - RelatedReport: Panthers have received multiple calls for RB Christian McCaffreyValue of Panthers QB Sam Darnold has reportedly 'cratered' - - List - - 4 quarterbacks the Panthers should consider in free agency - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
