Matt Rhule and the Carolina Panthers now have more than just their highly-publicized offensive coordinator opening to fill. In fact, they have three more spots to address—one of which will net them a new play-caller on special teams. That search, as reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, has now begun with two guys—Chicago Bears special teams coordinator Chris Tabor and Denver Broncos special teams coordinator Tom McMahon. These are the first two names to pop up for the position, at least publicly, following Tuesday’s firing of Chase Blackburn. After serving as an assistant on special teams for the organization from 2008 to 2010, followed up by a seven-year run heading the Cleveland Browns’ unit, he returned to take up the post in 2018. McMahon, who isn’t a “former” coordinator for Denver either, has been the special teams coordinator for four different teams (the then St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts and Broncos) over the past 13 seasons. Both men are unlikely to return after their team’s firings of head coaches Matt Nagy and Vic Fangio.
