The second go-round for Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers didn’t go as hoped at least as far as the final result is concerned. But what his return did show us is that there’s more love than ever for No. 1. On Saturday, Alma Adams the United States House of Representatives member for North Carolina’s 12th congressional district nominated Newton for the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and the Order of the Palmetto. Both distinctions are considered the two of the highest honors the governors of North and South Carolina can award an individual. On #NationalHatDay, I'm proud to nominate Carolina @Panthers legend @CameronNewton for the Order of the Long Leaf Pine and the Order of the Palmetto, the highest awards given by the governors of the Carolinas. Thanks Cam for all you've done for Charlotte and the Carolinas. pic.twitter.com/p9jWx8vxl5 — Rep. Alma Adams (@RepAdams) January 15, 2022 - The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, given out in North Carolina, recognizes those “who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.” South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto, similarly, is the “highest civilian honor presented in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, service and contributions on a national or statewide scale.” As Adams notes in her nomination, Newton has meant a great deal to the states both on and off the field. Not only has he led the Panthers to the greatest peaks in franchise history, but and more importantly his contributions to the community have made a lasting impact of their own. Whether Newton remains with the team for the upcoming 2022 season is another matter for another day. But whatever ultimately happens for Newton’s football career from here on out, there’s no doubting the indelible mark he’s made over his decade of service in the Carolinas.
