We may have a leader in the clubhouse for the Carolina Panthers’ offensive coordinator opening, folks. - And that could very well be Scottie Montgomery, who is now the first known candidate to receive a second interview from the team. As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Shelby, N.C. native was brought in for an in-person talk on Wednesday following what was, apparently, a successful virtual meeting. - - The #Panthers spent today interviewing #Colts RBs coach Scottie Montgomery again for their vacant OC job, source said. They initially spoke to him virtually, today was in person. - — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 19, 2022 - - - Currently the running backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts, Montgomery presumably had quite a hand in Jonathan Taylor’s special 1,811-yard, 18-touchdown rushing campaign. Given Rhule’s past assertions for an established ground game, perhaps Montgomery’s work with Taylor from the 2021 season has some appeal to the second-year head coach. - In a bit of a contradiction to another one of Rhule’s past assertions, however, Montgomery does not have a track record as an offensive coordinator in the NFL. Last Monday, Rhule told reporters that, above all, he was looking for a candidate with a history of actually calling plays—preferably at the pro level. - Montgomery’s experience in that particular realm is limited to the college ranks—where he was the coordinator for Duke University from 2013 to 2015 and the University of Maryland from 2019 to 2020. - - RelatedPanthers HC Matt Rhule reportedly 'sent some feelers' out for Chip Kelly - - RelatedPep Hamilton reportedly denies Panthers' interview request for OC job - - List - - Panthers 2021 offensive coordinator search tracker - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Panthers Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Panthers Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
