The Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-5 regular season record; a marked improvement from where the team was in Mike McCarthy’s first year at the helm. Yet it wasn’t good enough. Early season success brought high expectations which ultimately didn’t pan out and ended with a disappointing loss in the opening round of the playoffs. - Winning the division was a step in the right direction, but there is still a ways to go for the Cowboys to reach their ultimate goal. The franchise hasn’t even strung together back-to-back playoff appearances since the 2006-2007 seasons and no team in the NFC East has repeated as divisional champions since the 2001-2004 Philadelphia Eagles. If the Cowboys are going to break both streaks, they’ll need to get better in multiple areas. - One reason to believe the Cowboys can back up a good year with another is coaching continuity. Both coordinators return under McCarthy, even though that didn’t look to be the case when the season ended. Both offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and the NFL’s assistant of the year, DC Dan Quinn, had multiple head coaching interviews lined up. - Here are three major areas where Dallas needs to improve if they want to end their ridiculous drought of not being among the final four teams standing at the end of the 2022 campaign. These aren’t the only places where the Cowboys need to get better, but they’re the key places where progress is essential.
