The Denver Broncos are expected to hire Tyrone Wheatley as their new running backs coach, Matt Zenitz of On3.com first reported on Saturday. - Curtis Modkins, who served as Denver’s running backs coach from 2018-2021, is expected to join the Minnesota Vikings’ coaching staff. - Wheatley, 50, played running back at Michigan from 1991-1994 before going on to have a 10-year career in the NFL, playing for the New York Giants and Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders. - Wheatley totaled 5,862 yard from scrimmage and scored 47 touchdowns in the NFL before he retired in 2005. Wheatley transitioned to coaching in 2007 when he became the head coach at Robichaud, his high school. - Wheatley later coached running backs at three different colleges before getting a RBs coach job with the Buffalo Bills in 2013. After two seasons in Buffalo, Wheatley served as the Michigan Wolverines‘ running backs coach from 2015-2016. - He returned to the NFL in 2017 as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ RBs coach. Wheatley most recently served as the head coach at Morgan State from 2019-2021, posting a 5-18 record in two seasons (2020 was canceled due to COVID-19). - Wheatley’s top running back under contract in Denver is Javonte Williams.
