Melvin Gordon is scheduled to become a free agent in March and he’ll turn 29 in April. - The veteran running back still has gas left in the tank, but if he re-signs with the Denver Broncos, his days as a workhorse back will likely be over. - Gordon was already sharing carries with 21-year-old rookie Javonte Williams last year, and he knows Williams’ role will only increase with time. - “I know eventually they want him to be the guy and to take over,” Gordon said during a recent interview with Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports. “And the thing is, I’m still fairly young and I still want to compete at a high level. I just don’t wanna take a backseat. - “So I don’t know at what point they’re just gonna to be like, ‘OK, we’re gonna to make him the guy and just kind of put Melvin on the backburner.’ That’s something to worry about, but I haven’t really gotten that from George [Paton]. He sounds as if he likes both of us a lot [and] feels he can use both of us to help the team win.” - Gordon went on to say staying in Denver is his “priority,” but it’s clear that he has no delusions about how the team’s backfield is trending. - Gordon will officially become a free agent on March 16. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - 30 best draft prospects at Broncos' biggest positions of need - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
