The Denver Broncos had one of the worst special teams units in the NFL under former special teams coordinator Tom McMahon. - New coordinator Dwayne Stukes aims to change that, stating during his introductory press conference on Tuesday that he wants to “raise the standard” with an “attack mentality” and a fast, physical approach on special teams. - Stukes didn’t directly throw the team’s former scheme under the bus, but he’s excited about the new scheme he’s bringing to Denver. - “I’m not here to critique the scheme from last year,” Stukes said. “That’s not my job. My job is to get the guys this year to play at a high level. Obviously, we saw that we were ranked last in kickoff return average and last in kickoff return average against, so that will be an emphasis going forward.” - Stukes said he and assistant special teams coach Mike Mallory will teach techniques and fundamentals that will “put [players] in position to make plays consistently.” - “I don’t want to talk about what happened last year as far as that because I don’t really know their scheme that they ran,” he said. “All I can talk about is the scheme that we’re going to run and how excited I am to work with the guys. I think we have a lot of talent on this roster. I think we have core special teams players on this roster. - “I think we have guys that can help and play at a high level on this roster so I’m excited to work with the guys we have in the building and watch the culture change as guys get familiar with the scheme. Once guys start buying in and they see the success of the scheme, that’s when you get the buy-in.” - It won’t take much for Stukes to win over Broncos fans. The new coordinator didn’t take any shots McMahon, but fans certainly have, and the bar has been set so low that even minimal improvement on special teams will stand out this fall. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - 30 best draft prospects at Broncos' biggest positions of need - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
