Josey Jewell’s numbers might not jump off the page — he totaled 113 tackles, four pass breakups and two sacks in 2020 — but his impact on the Denver Broncos’ defense can certainly be felt when he’s not on the field. - Jewell started two games last year before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury. Denver’s defense took a big hit as the team’s remaining linebackers struggled to replace Jewell, especially against the run. - “Josey — I’ve said it before, he was the glue that kept our defense together,” general manager George Paton said last Friday. “He’s so smart and he’s so instinctive. He fits in any defense, I believe. When we lost Josey, it really hurt our defense as you can see.” - Jewell became an unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Broncos brought him back on a two-year, $11 million contract. Health permitting, he’ll return to having a “glue” role for Denver this fall. - “The coaches are really high on him, and I’m obviously high on him,” Paton said of Jewell. “The more you’re around him, the more you love him. He’s a great leader, a great worker, and a really good player. He’s definitely going to help us.” - In 49 career games (30 starts), the 27-year-old linebacker has totaled 217 tackles, seven QB hits, eight pass breakups and 3.5 sacks. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - Russell Wilson trade: Seahawks fan provides Seattle perspective for Broncos fans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
