Josh Johnson is a journeyman quarterback who has spent time with 14 different NFL teams and four different football leagues (the NFL, USL, AAF and XFL). The 35-year-old quarterback has been a career backup since 2010, but his ability to support a starter and start in a pinch makes him valuable to NFL teams. - His latest team is the Denver Broncos, who will start Russell Wilson this fall and wanted a QB with a similar style backing him up. Johnson will have to compete with Brett Rypien to win the backup job, and he’s up for the challenge. - “The right opportunity was the opportunity to come and compete for the No. 2 spot,” Johnson said at his introductory press conference on Monday. “It’s something I’ve been working to put myself in position to do with limited opportunity. Just the conversation I had with Mr. [George] Paton and Coach [Nathaniel] Hackett, I felt like they recognized my skillset and what I can bring as a potential backup quarterback for this team in support of Russell Wilson. - “All those things played a factor into it. I think it’s a great fit for me. I’m excited for this point in my career. I still have a lot of football left in me. I’m excited to be here and help this team get to where it’s trying to get to.” - Johnson has started nine games in his career, including one for the Baltimore Ravens last season. He has thrown for 2,270 yards with 13 touchdowns against 16 interceptions while adding 422 rushing yards and another score on the ground. - For the first time since Peyton Manning’s retirement, Denver’s big quarterback competition this summer will be for the backup job. That will be a refreshing change for Broncos fans. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - Russell Wilson trade: Seahawks fan provides Seattle perspective for Broncos fans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
