New Denver Broncos defensive lineman DJ Jones can generate pressure up the middle — he totaled seven sacks in his last 42 games with the San Francisco 49ers — but the Broncos added him primarily for his ability to stuff the run. - Jones (6-0, 321 pounds) had the best run stuff rate among all interior defensive lineman in the NFL last season: 6.6%, which was the third-best rate since 2016, according to Next Gen Stats. That’s exactly why Denver signed him. - “DJ was a very important piece,” general manager George Paton said last Friday. “I thought we needed to improve our run defense. We needed to close games better. We couldn’t get off the field when we needed to last year due in large part to our run defense. DJ is one of the better run defenders in the league. The thing I like about him is he can rush the passer as well. - “He’s quick, he’s athletic, and he’s really instinctive. The thing that really set him apart from other [defensive] tackles is his ability to play the run.” - Jones has recorded 126 tackles (including 23 tackles for losses), nine quarterback hits, seven sacks, three pass breakups and three forced fumbles in 61 career games (46 starts). He’s exactly what the Broncos needed up front. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - DJ Jones signing: 49ers fan provides San Francisco perspective for Broncos fans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
