Bad news for fantasy football managers who were hoping to see Javonte Williams emerge as a workhorse running back this fall — the Denver Broncos prefer a backfield rotation. - The Broncos are very pleased with Williams and he’s poised to have a big year, but coach Nathaniel Hackett indicated at the NFL owners meetings in Florida on Monday he’ll likely continue using a backfield committee. - “I think with any running back, you always want to have as many as you can,” Hackett said. “You want a big stable. You want to have a guy that you can feed and make sure he gets a lot. He’s still a young player, and he’s still learning. You want to make sure you can split it as much as you can. - “I think last year, we had a great — actually, a lot of the places that I’ve been, there’s always been kind of two guys because you always want to try to split the load as much as you can. At the same time, he’s a great player. We’ll just have to see how the whole thing goes.” - Last year, Williams got 246 touches, just 15 more than Melvin Gordon (231). In Green Bay, where Hackett was the offensive coordinator, the Packers gave Aaron Jones 223 touches, marking a near-even split with AJ Dillon (221 touches). - That’s bad news for fantasy managers because the RBs essentially split their production in half, but it’s good news for the real-life Broncos because it helps both backs stay healthy and fresh (generally). - The question for Denver is, who will be Williams’ primary backfield partner this season? Gordon is still an unsigned free agent and the Broncos have not ruled out the possibility of re-signing the veteran. - If Denver does not bring Gordon back, the Broncos will likely add a running back in the NFL draft. - Follow the Broncos Wire Podcast: - Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts - - - List - - Russell Wilson trade: Seahawks fan provides Seattle perspective for Broncos fans - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Broncos Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Broncos Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
