The Denver Broncos have signed Canadian Football League pass rusher Jonathan Kongbo to a future contract, the team announced Wednesday. Kongbo (6-5, 256 pounds) was one of two CFL players who worked out for the Broncos earlier this week. He played defensive end in Canada, but Kongbo might be a better fit as an outside linebacker in Denver’s 3-4 scheme (if the Broncos continue using that base lineup). The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released Kongbo on Wednesday in a procedural move that would allow him to jump to the NFL. Winnipeg selected Kongbo in the first round of the 2019 CFL draft when he graduated from Tennessee. After winning the Grey Cup (Canada’s Super Bowl) as a rookie, Kongbo left Canada for a stint with the San Francisco 49ers in 2020, but he suffered a season-ending injury during training camp. The pass rusher then returned to the Blue Bombers in 2021 and won another championship. In two CFL seasons (26 games), Kongbo totaled 28 tackles and four sacks. He will officially join Denver’s 90-man offseason roster when the new league year begins in March.
