Despite playing in a shared backfield, Melvin Gordon had a productive two-year run with the Denver Broncos from 2020-2021, totaling 2,275 yards from scrimmage and scoring 20 touchdowns. That kind of production taken at face value would make him a strong candidate to be re-signed, but there are more numbers to consider. Gordon will turn 29 years old this offseason, and running backs typically begin to decline as they approach 30. Gordon also earned about $8 million per year with the Broncos, and he had the third-highest cap hit (just under $9 million) among running backs last season. Gordon has also fumbled 21 times in his career, including seven fumbles in 31 games in Denver. Those fumbles and the running back’s high salary certainly didn’t make him a fan favorite. The Broncos could draft a running back in April in the third or fourth round and have him under contract for the next four years at a team-friendly salary. Or the team could re-sign Gordon, presumably with a big pay cut. Broncos Wire’s estimation is Gordon would have to cut his salary in half in order to remain in Denver, but that’s just a rough guess.
