With Doug Pederson’s signing and initial press conference out of the way, it’s now time for the veteran head coach to start piecing his staff together for his new team in the Jacksonville Jaguars. Of course, none of those hires will be more important than the offensive coordinator role (though Pederson will call the plays) as that assistant will play a key role in the development of Trevor Lawrence. - According to USA TODAY’s Josina Anderson, one assistant they are eyeing for the role is Houston Texans passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton. However, with him being one of the Texans’ staff members who weren’t let go with David Culley, the team had to request permission to speak to the veteran assistant, who has been a popular name around the league this offseason. - - Meanwhile, I’m told the #Jaguars have submitted a request to interview Pep Hamilton for their offensive coordinator position, per league source. - — IG: JosinaAnderson (@JosinaAnderson) February 7, 2022 - - - Hamilton was a finalist for the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator job under Brian Daboll and received interest from the Chicago Bears for the same role. The Carolina Panthers also reached out to him but he declined to interview. - If the Jags were able to interview Hamilton it would be a huge deal when looking at his work with young quarterbacks. He coached Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert as a rookie and aided the former Oregon star to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He also coached Andrew Luck during his second season as an offensive coordinator, and under his tutelage, Luck was able to propel the Indianapolis Colts to the playoffs. - This past season, Hamilton got to coach another rookie in Davis Mills while in Houston. Mills ended up starting in 11 games in the process and finished the season 263-of-394 (66.8%) for 16 touchdowns and 10 picks. Unfortunately for the rookie, it only propelled Houston to a 2-9 record. - There have been other offensive minds who the Jags have reportedly shown interest in like Press Taylor and Andrew Breiner, but it’s unknown what roles they are being considered for. If it’s for an offensive coordinator role, neither has a resume like Hamilton’s as he brings 12 years of coaching experience to the table. - Unfortunately, the Jags’ chances to land Hamilton may not be high as the Texans clearly want him to work with their next coach. According to Sarah Barshop of ESPN, that’s especially the plan for Texans defensive coordinator Lovie Smith, who has interviewed for their head coaching vacancy and is fine with a promotion for Hamilton. - - If Lovie Smith is hired to be the Texans' next head coach, Pep Hamilton is expected to be Houston's offensive coordinator, a source told ESPN. - — Sarah Barshop (@sarahbarshop) February 7, 2022 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jaguars Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jaguars Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
