A former Kansas City Chiefs assistant is returning to the coaching staff after several years away as head coach of the Chicago Bears. - The Chiefs announced on Friday that they’ve officially hired Matt Nagy as a senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. Nagy returns to Kansas City, where he spent five seasons as the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013-15, was the co-offensive coordinator with Brad Childress in 2016 and was the sole offensive coordinator during Alex Smith’s best season in 2017. That season also happened to be Patrick Mahomes’ rookie season, so the two are already quite familiar with each other. - - We have hired Matt Nagy as Senior Assistant/Quarterbacks Coach. - : AP Photo/Nam Y. Things quickly spiraled from there for Nagy and he’d finish his tenure with the Bears with a 33-34 record, including postseason play. Nagy was fired after four seasons along with general manager Ryan Pace. - Nagy played QB in the NFL under Andy Reid in Philadelphia, which led to his first coaching opportunity with Reid and the Eagles back in 2009. - This reunion made a lot of sense as soon as Mike Kafka left for the New York Giants. Nagy already knows the key players, play-callers and the way that things operate in Kansas City. If he can help Mahomes become more consistent after an inconsistent 2021 NFL season, it could put him on the fast track to earning another head-coaching opportunity in the NFL. - - List - - 6 potential salary cap casualties Chiefs could target in free agency - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Chiefs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Chiefs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
