Kansas City Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu is expected to test the free agent market. - He’ll get his first shot at negotiating with teams beginning on Monday when the league’s legal tampering period opens. With free agency just around the corner, several analysts across the league have taken a shot at projecting what Mathieu’s market and asking price might look like. - ESPN took at simulating free agency, posing offers as three different teams. CBS Sports analyst Joel Corry, a former NFL agent, also recently published an article with projected asking prices for top free agents. Here’s a look at the different takes they had on what Tyrann Mathieu could potentially be offered on the open market. - - ESPN’s Adam Teicher (Chiefs) – 2 years, $29.5 million with $20 million guaranteed. - ESPN’s Rich Cimini (Jets) – 2 years, $28 million with $21 million guaranteed and a Year 3 void year. - ESPN’s Mike Triplett (Saints) – 3 years, $42 million with $28 million guaranteed and two void years. - CBS Sports’ Joel Corry – 4 years, $66 million with $35 million in guarantees. - - ESPN’s valuation seems to have Mathieu in the $14-15 million per year range, while Corry has Mathieu earning a $16.5 million per year average. Mathieu is coming off of a deal that is very similar to the one proposed by Triplett above, which was a 3-year deal worth $42 million straight up, with $26.8 million in guaranteed money. - I tend to believe that Mathieu is not only deserving of a raise, but the market for safety has increased quite a bit since he signed his deal with Kansas City back in 2019. Corry’s deal seems the most likely of the four options as it would pay him in line with Jamal Adams, Harrison Smith and Justin Simmons, right at the top of the market. I’d be surprised if he signed for anything less than $15 million per year and pushed upwards of $30 million in guaranteed money. - While Mathieu turns 30 in May, he’s coming off of a productive three-year stretch where he’s recorded over 200 tackles, 13 interceptions, 27 passes defended, eight tackles for loss and three sacks. He also earned two First-Team All-Pro selections, two Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl ring during that same stretch. - - List - - 5 bargain free agents for Chiefs to consider in 2022 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Chiefs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Chiefs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
