The Kansas City Chiefs have signed WR JuJu Smith-Schuster on a one-year deal. Early reports indicated that it would be a one-year deal worth $10.75 million for Smith-Schuster, but his contract was more than meets the eye. The guaranteed salary is actually much lower, with incentives potentially pushing the contract up to $10.75 million. - According to the folks at OverTheCap, Smith-Schuster’s contract with the Chiefs carries a total of $1.035 million in guaranteed salary and a $1.455 million signing bonus. That brings his total guaranteed money to $2.49 million at the point of signing his contract. His workout bonus brings his cap total to $2.89 million for the 2022 NFL season. - Many of Smith-Schuster’s performance-based incentives are considered not likely to be earned (NLTBE), which means the Chiefs do not have to account for them against this year’s salary cap. The folks at Pro Football Talk report that $2 million of those $7.5 million worth of incentives are attached to the Chiefs making it to the AFC championship game. They’ve done so in each of the past four NFL seasons, so that incentive might be one that ends up likely to be earned and they’ll have to account for it into the season. - If Smith-Schuster ends up being the player that the Chiefs think he can be in this offense, this contract will end up looking like a massive steal for the team. If he falters, it’s hardly a situation where the team will be looking back in frustration at the contract. It’s also not a bad opportunity for Smith-Schuster, who has a chance to reset his market and earn his keep after a 2021 NFL season where he dealt with injury. - - List - - 6 things to know about new Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Chiefs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Chiefs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
