This season, the Kansas City Chiefs have had many offensive weapons reach the endzone from the receiving end of a Patrick Mahomes pass. The latest for the club was the least likely to have that honor, but when his opportunity came he made it count the most. - Chiefs backup offensive guard Nick Allegretti put his name in the scoring column during Kansas City’s wild-card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. During the third-quarter play, he was an eligible receiver that saw him as Mahomes’ target on a 1-yard touchdown pass. The “thicc six,” as it was cheerfully dubbed on social media, was discussed during Allegretti’s press conference on Wednesday. - Allegretti never dreamed of catching a touchdown pass in the NFL, let alone during a playoff game in primetime. In fact, his last catch in a game came quite a long time ago. - “No, absolutely not,” said Allegretti when asked if he’s ever scored a touchdown before. “One catch in like the eighth-grade end of the year celebration game, and that was it, so it was pretty crazy.” - Chiefs HC Andy Reid explained to reporters that he keeps a close eye on the offensive linemen during their “touch and go” period during practice. That way he knows who has the best hands of the bunch. The offensive linemen have another name for that period. - “Yeah, we call that our fat and slow period, and I know he’s paying attention to everything,” Allegretti explained. “I think it’s pretty obvious. You can tell some guys definitely cannot catch but didn’t quite know he was scouting us. So, glad I was doing well out there.” - The score led to a full team celebration, which involved Allegretti spiking the ball in only a way that an offensive lineman could. Thankfully, one of his teammates tracked down the ball, which he was able to keep as a nice memento of his score. - “Yeah, they did get the ball back for me,” Allegretti said. “So, Pat [Patrick Mahomes] signed it and I’ll probably put that up in the house somewhere, just closed on a house today. So, going to put that in the house. It’s a pretty cool piece of memorabilia for my career.” - As a backup offensive lineman, Allegretti doesn’t often get much work in games. It’s possible he’ll only get a handful of snaps against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round. If Allegretti is needed, he’s proven that he can come off the bench as both a traditional offensive lineman and as a pass-catcher. - - List - - First injury report for Chiefs vs. Bills, divisional round - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Chiefs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Chiefs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
