The Jets are looking to replace Ashtyn Davis, according to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes. - The 2020 third-round safety is coming off an up-and-down first two seasons in the NFL. Davis failed to capitalize on opportunities in the deep secondary in 2021 after the Jets lost their starting safeties to season-ending injuries. - The 25-year-old Davis finished with 62 tackles, one interception, three defended passes and three forced fumbles in 13 games. He also allowed a 78.8 completion percentage, a 123.1 quarterback rating and 15.7 yards per completion while playing 62.66 percent of the Jets’ defensive snaps. Davis has 98 career tackles after missing seven games over the past two years. - Davis joins a list of disappointing 2020 Jets picks, which also includes second-round WR Denzel Mims, third-round DE Jabari Zuniga, fourth-round RB La’Mical Perine and fourth-round QB James Morgan. Fourth-round OL Cameron Clark retired after suffering a career-ending spinal injury before his second season, while the jury is still out on first-round pick Mekhi Becton following a season-ending injury in the first game of his sophomore year. - There are a few different ways the Jets could replace Davis. They could release or trade him before his third season. New York would save $772,966 and only incur a $568,140 dead cap hit if it cut him. - The more likely scenario is just finding a better starting option in free agency or the draft. Davis proved he can make plays at times, but he isn’t good enough to play the majority of the team’s snaps. There are a couple of good safety prospects in the draft, starting with Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton. Players like Marcus Williams and Jessie Bates III are great free agent options as well, though they will be costly considering they’re just entering their primes. - - List - - 6 Jets who could be traded this offseason - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jets Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jets Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
