Former Jets defensive end John Abraham wants his old team to add more competition at the quarterback position. - He thinks New York should take another quarterback in the 2022 draft because he isn’t convinced Zach Wilson is the answer. - “I’m so stupid, I would draft another quarterback. I would. I would literally draft another quarterback,” Abraham recently said on the Upon Further Review podcast. “I don’t got nothing bad to say about Zach, but I’m just like, I don’t know if he’s the guy.” - Wilson is coming off a poor rookie season in which he completed 55.6 percent of his passes for only 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games. Wilson did improve over the final five games of the season — he didn’t throw an interception over that span — but he still has a lot of developing to do in his second season. - Abraham wants the Jets to light a fire under Wilson rather than hand him the job again in 2022. - - “Let’s just shake the table up and show you, like, if you want this job, we’re going to bring somebody in that can take it,” Abraham said. “Not saying Zach can’t play in the league, you know, he just ain’t had his opportunities yet being a rookie, but I definitely [would] put a lot of pressure on him this year.” - Despite Abraham’s input, don’t bet on the Jets going in this direction. Robert Saleh already said he wants to bring back Joe Flacco and Mike White, who are both free agents. This is also a weak QB draft class that only gets worse in the later rounds. The Jets have four picks in the first 40 selections and will use them to fill their various positions of need rather than take another young quarterback. - If not another quarterback, Abraham would prefer New York use one of those early picks on a defensive player. The Jets haven’t had a great pass-rusher since they traded Abraham to the Falcons in 2006. They could use either of their top-10 picks on an edge rusher in a class rife with talent. - “They need a defensive lineman. I think that would be very good for them,” Abraham said. “Solidify D-end, kind of like Shaun Ellis, somebody that can stay there for 10 years.” - That move is significantly more likely than the Jets taking another quarterback at any point in the draft. - - List - - 7 backup quarterbacks the Jets could target in free agency - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jets Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jets Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
