Todd Bowles is back to being the man in charge four years after his first head coaching stint came to an end. - Bowles was named the Buccaneers’ new head coach Wednesday night after Bruce Arians unexpectedly retired. Arians is transitioning into a front office role with the organization. Bowles joined Arians’ coaching staff as Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator in 2019 and helped the Bucs win a Super Bowl in 2020. - The Buccaneers are giving Bowles a fresh five-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. - “Todd is a great football coach and I know he will do excellent things here with the Buccaneers,” Arians said in a statement. “The coaching staff has been crucial to the success we have enjoyed here the past few seasons. Coaching is about teaching players, and this staff has some of the best teachers in the business.” - Bowles went 24-40 as the Jets’ head coach from 2015-18. The long-time assistant went 10-6 and nearly led New York to the postseason in his first season at the helm, but his tenure with the franchise went off the rails shortly thereafter. - Bowles failed to win more than five games in his final three seasons with the Jets. New York got off to a 1-5 start in 2016 and never came close to recovering, finishing 5-11. Another 5-11 season followed in 2017 and, with much of the veteran core from the 2015 team out the door, the Jets finished 4-12 in Bowles’ final season. - Bowles managed to redeem himself with the Buccaneers and was credited with designing a defensive game plan that stymied Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV. Tampa Bay boasted one of the best run defenses in football last season despite a rash of injuries to Bowles’ defense. - Bowles interviewed for the Vikings’ head coaching vacancy earlier this offseason. Minnesota ultimately hired Rams offensive coordinator Kevin McConnell. - The 58-year-old Bowles will now step in as the head coach of one of the top contenders in the NFC after Tom Brady’s decision to come out of retirement. Tampa Bay is hoping Bowles learned a thing or two from his failed stint with the Jets, as the franchise’s window to win is open. - - List - - 8 takeaways from Joe Douglas' NFL owners meetings presser - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jets Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jets Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
