Call it bad luck or bias, but Jets opponents have been penalized at the fourth-lowest rate since 2018, according to ESPN’s Mike Triplett. - Jets opponents have been flagged 441 times over the past four seasons. That trails only Saints, Vikings, Packers and Jaguars opponents. This past year was especially bad for Gang Green. Teams that played the Jets were penalized just 100 times over 17 games in 2021. Saints and Buccaneers opponents had 97 flags apiece. - There doesn’t seem to be an explanation for this odd trend, according to ex-referee and current ESPN analyst John Parry, nor is there a correlation between successful teams and unsuccessful teams. The Saints are 47-18 since 2018. The Steelers, whose opponents have been penalized the most over that span, have a 38-25-2 record. - “We focus on the task, not the teams,” Parry told ESPN. “Officials are expected, trained and evaluated to be as consistently accurate as possible week in and week out.” - A low number of penalties for the opposition doesn’t excuse the Jets’ abysmal 17-48 record and 29th-ranked point differential since 2018. However, it is one thing that hasn’t broken in their favor that they can’t control. - - List - - 2022 NFL draft: Jets land top safety, dynamic wideout in Mel Kiper Jr.'s latest mock - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jets Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jets Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
