Former NFL cornerback Antonio Cromartie accomplished a lot during his playing career. - He was a first-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2006, collected 31 interceptions in 11 NFL seasons, set an NFL record with a 109-yard return touchdown in 2007, and made four Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team. In his five years with the Jets, Cromartie tallied 13 interceptions, 189 combined tackles and 63 defended passes. - Now Cromartie has set his sights on a new goal: become a college head coach in five years. He wants to do so at a school in a Power Five conference – the ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Pac 12 or Big 12. - - I will be a HC in the next 5 years at a major P5 program. - — ANTONIO CROMARTIE (@CRO31) January 20, 2022 - - - Cromartie began his coaching career this past season when he joined Texas A&M as a graduate assistant under Jimbo Fisher. He also worked with the Jets as an intern in 2018 under Todd Bowles after retiring from the NFL earlier that year. - Cromartie likely has some experience to gain before he becomes a head coach at a major program, but he has a few examples he can follow. Former NFL players like Antonio Pierce, DeMarco Murray, Keary Colbert and Kevin Falk have positional or coordinator jobs at big schools and could move up the ranks soon. Though he’s not at a Power Five school, Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders recently became the head coach at Jackson State and secured cornerback Travis Hunter, the No. 1 college prospect in the country. - - List - - 9 head-coaching candidates with connections to the Jets - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Jets Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Jets Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
