The Miami Dolphins on Sunday announced the hire of 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their new head coach. - McDaniel, 38, has been with the 49ers since Kyle Shanahan arrived in 2017. He was the run game coordinator for the first four years, and got promoted to offensive coordinator last season. - This is McDaniel’s first crack at a head-coaching job after spending most of his coaching career as an assistant under Shanahan. He was an intern for the Broncos in 2005, then joined Shanahan in Houston from 2006-08. He was an offensive assistant for Washington and a wide receivers coach from 2011-13 while Shanahan was their offensive coordinator, then he followed Shanahan to Cleveland where he held the wide receivers coach job. - In 2015 when Shanahan went to the Falcons McDaniel followed and took on an offensive assistant job for two years. - The 49ers will receive a pair of compensatory third-round picks under the expanded Rooney Rule since McDaniel is multiracial. It’s the second time in as many offseasons that they’ve had a minority assistant hired as a head coach by another team. Former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was hired to be the Jets head coach last offseason. - - List - - All 32 teams as potential destinations for Jimmy Garoppolo - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Niners Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Niners Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
