The 49ers’ quarterback situation doesn’t stop at the starter’s spot where Trey Lance is expected to take over for Jimmy Garoppolo. The club will also need to add a backup signal caller who will take on two important roles. - A backup QB for Lance will first and foremost need to help guide the rookie through his first full season as a starter. That’s why just drafting a QB won’t necessarily work. Having effectively two rookies manning the top two spots on the QB depth chart is untenable. They’ll need a veteran. - The QB2 will also need to be capable of winning a game or two in the event Lance isn’t available. If he’s going to run as often as he did in his 10 quarters of action in 2021, there’s a chance he gets banged up and forces the 49ers to turn to the backup. - Threading he needle between veteran and capable starter is tough to do without paying big money, but investing in the QB2 is something the 49ers should do this offseason.
