Two years ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to move on from Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback after five seasons, and see what else they might find on the open market. - What they found was the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, who would help lead them to the most successful two-year stretch in franchise history. - Now that Brady is retiring after an epic run that included a Super Bowl win, the Bucs are faced with another offseason crossroads at the game’s most important position. - “It’s something that we knew was going to happen at some point,” Bucs general manager Jason Licht told the media Tuesday. “It didn’t completely shock us in the last 24 hours that this could happen, so we’ve been preparing. We were in this situation a couple of years ago where Bruce [Arians] and I both said we’ll have to look behind door No. 2. We’re at that position again.” - Licht talked up the in-house options, but also made it clear the Bucs will once again turn over every stone in their pursuit of the best possible quarterback to keep them in playoff contention for the near future. - “We’re very excited about the development of Kyle [Trask], where he has come from in the last year and what he has done – just being able to sit behind Tom [Brady], Blaine [Gabbert] and Ryan [Griffin], as well, in that room with Clyde [Christensen], Tom Moore and B.A. (Bruce Arians). We’re going to explore all avenues to try to make the best decision we can for the organization, but it didn’t come as a surprise.” - After acknowledging Brady’s profound impact on the franchise in such a short time, Licht reiterated that this situation is one for which they’ve already been preparing. - “We totally respect Tom’s decision,” Licht said. “It’s an unbelievable feat on his part, not just his career – we’ve only had him for less than 10 percent of his career – but what he has done for us is monumental and will transcend many generations here in Tampa. We will have to make the decision that is best for us moving forward and we’re prepared for doing that.” - - List - - Who should replace Tom Brady as Bucs' QB? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Bucs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Bucs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
