Ever since he announced his retirement (without using the word, “retirement”) from the NFL after 22 seasons, Tom Brady has been the subject of rampant speculation regarding whether or not he’ll eventually return to the game, even as soon as the 2022 season. - One of the latest theories is that Brady would indeed return, but not to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team he’s helped lead to the playoffs in each of the past two seasons. - Instead, Brady would continue his NFL playing career with his favorite team from childhood, the San Francisco 49ers. - This idea comes from Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk: - “I’m telling you, it’s unavoidable. He’s not gonna lower himself to have to dirty himself the way Aaron Rodgers is. He’s gonna work it all behind the scenes. I just … I think he’s gonna be with the 49ers Week 1. I’m rooting for that so badly.” - Brady is technically still under contract with the Bucs, so if he wants to play for the 49ers this season, Tampa Bay would have to trade him to San Francisco or outright release him. - Considering the 49ers just gave up multiple first-round picks to trade up for their quarterback of the future (Trey Lance) in last year’s NFL draft, it seems unlikely they would give up more premium picks just for Brady to arrive and delay Lance’s tenure as the starter for at least another year. - If Brady does return, it still makes the most sense that the Bucs would want him to do so in Tampa Bay. That said, if Brady really wanted to force their hand into a trade, they would likely get the best offer possible and make it happen. - - Gallery - Best photos of Tom Brady's epic 2-year run with the Bucs - - - - - - view 111 images - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Bucs Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Bucs Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
