Washington Head Coach Ron Rivera had a good time with punter Tress Way on his “Hang Time” podcast Friday. - Here are some nuggets: - Rivera told of how when he was the defensive coordinator with the Bears back in 2006, his office phone rang one night. This being before he had a cell phone, he figured it was his wife calling. - He answered only to hear a male voice saying he was Joey and he was thinking of playing the Bears defense against the Jets in fantasy football that Sunday. Joey asked, “Coach, what do you think?” Rivera played along, “I like our guys, Brian Urlacher is having a heck of a year, our rush has been good and I like our coverage guys to make some plays.” - Joey excitedly replied, “Oh, thanks, Coach, I am going to play you guys against the Jets.” Rivera kindly ended, “Ok, Joey, now do me a favor. Don’t call me again.” To which Joey responded, “Ok, no problem, Coach.” - Rivera hung up the phone and Sunday came and the Bears defeated the Jets and the defense had a good day holding the Jets down for most of the game. - Sure enough Monday night, Rivera was in his office working and…. you guessed it. The phone rang, Rivera picked it up, “Coach, this Joey, I just wanted to call and thank you.” Rivera responded, “Joey, don’t call me again, you are cheating your buddies talking with me” (laughter). - Coach Ron recalled how his father, an Army officer who served 32 years, told him when he was named head coach of Carolina, “Ronny, never forget this, ‘when you are in the heat of battle and things are going crazy and there is all this excitement and noise and everything is out of control, your soldiers are going to look at you and see if you are in control. If you are in control, they will calm down and stay in control.'” - When Rivera appears in public one of the most repeated responses is, “You are a lot bigger than I thought you were.” Rivera stands 6-foot-3, 240 pounds. Rivera typically responds with something like, “That is because you are used to seeing me on the sidelines beside guys like Cornelius Lucas or Brandon Scherff.” - Rivera played for the Bears and recalled one day head coach Mike Ditka was really getting after the players. Rivera approached him in his office, “Coach, can I ask you something? Why are you always on us like you are?” Ditka responded, “Ronny, just remember I will never ask you guys to do something I didn’t do as a player.” Rivera told Way that Ditka being a Hall of Famer, he certainly knew what it takes and had high standards, so Rivera learned he might want to listen closely to Ditka. - One summer, his Cal coach got him a job in construction. Rivera months later told the coach it was hard work, he had to get up a 6 a.m. every work day, plus he would work out to be in football shape for the season, so he was worn out every night early and just went to bed. His coach inquired, “Was it hard work? Did you like it?” Rivera responded it was really hard and he did not like it. His coach looked him in the eye and said, “Good, get your education and graduate.” Rivera conveyed he learned a life lesson that day. - Unfortunately, the Washington Football Team prohibits us from sharing the link to the program with you.
