The NFL lost a legend on Dec. 28, 2021, when John Madden died. Madden was a Hall of Fame coach but became even more famous for his work as a broadcaster. That wasn’t it for Madden, who most younger fans know through EA Sports’ popular “Madden NFL” video game. - Along with Pat Summerall, Madden was the NFL’s soundtrack from the 1980s into the 2000s. But for many, Madden was much more, including a mentor. Two current NFL head coaches cited Madden as a mentor: Kansas City’s Andy Reid and Washington’s Ron Rivera. - Madden influenced so many coaches, but Rivera and Reid were the most outspoken regarding his impact on their careers.
