“Just draft a quarterback.” - Say so many on Twitter. Washington is slated to draft in the No. 11 position in the 2022 NFL draft, on April 28. So the fans, excitedly demand the Commanders to draft a quarterback. - However, are you sure it is that simple? - Sometimes you have to wonder, what type of memory do these fans have of the NFL draft? How well do they recall recent drafts of quarterbacks? Most years there are quarterbacks overvalued, drafted too early who later fall flat on their faces. - Secondly, one class of quarterbacks does not equal another draft class of quarterbacks. Even more, frankly, sometimes one class should not even be compared with another class. The old saying, “That’s apples to oranges,” comes to mind. - As recently as last year’s 2021 NFL draft saw five quarterbacks drafted in the first round (Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones). Draft analysts have consistently informed their listeners/readers that this year’s quarterback class does not possess a single passer that would have been in last year’s top five. - “Just draft a quarterback!” - The 2012 class contained quarterbacks who had some real success. Russell Wilson (37,059 yards), Kirk Cousins (32,593 yards), Ryan Tannehill (30,729 yards), Andrew Luck (23,671 yards in only 6 seasons). Even Nick Foles started in the playoffs, winning a Super Bowl. - The 2013 quarterback class? - Its top passers became Mike Glennon (7,025 yards), Geno Smith (6,917 yards), EJ Manuel (3,767 yards), Matt Barkey (2,699 yards) and Landry Jones (1,310 yards). - “Just draft a quarterback!” Oh, if life was that simple. - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Washington Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Washington Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
