Washington has been searching for a franchise quarterback for years, swinging and missing at the position far too many times. The Commanders threw another dart at the board this week by acquiring Carson Wentz from the Colts in a deal that, well, doesn’t look good for Washington on the surface. - Not only are the Commanders taking on Wentz’s entire contract, which includes a cap hit of $28.3 million in 2022, but they gave up valuable draft picks, too. - Below are the full terms of the trade, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. - Commanders trade: - - 2022 third-round pick - 2023 third-round pick (becomes second-rounder if Wentz plays 70% of snaps) - 2022 second-round pick - - Colts trade: - - Carson Wentz - 2022 second-round pick - - So essentially, the Commanders gave up two third-round picks for Wentz and will move down five spots in the second round with that pick swap this year. The kicker is that the third-rounder could turn into a second if Wentz plays 70% of the offensive snaps, which if he’s the starter all season, he obviously will. - If Washington is out of the playoff hunt late in the year, don’t be surprised if Wentz is benched to avoid that third-rounder becoming a second. - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Washington Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Washington Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
