This 2021 NFL season reminds us that 30 years ago Washington assembled its greatest team in franchise history, going 14-2 and racing through the playoffs to the Super Bowl XXVI championship and Vince Lombardi Trophy. Week 14—Washington 27, Los Angeles Rams 6— December 1, 1991 Washington responded well to their only defeat of the season, easily defeating the Los Angeles Rams 27-6 at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, CA. Losing the previous week to Dallas at RFK, Washington rebounded raising their record to an NFL-best 12-1, as quarterback Mark Rypien threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers. The win for Washington clinched the NFC East Division while the Rams (3-10) lost their seventh consecutive game. Trailing 3-0 in the opening period, Rypien found tight end Terry Orr wide open down the left sideline from 49 yards. Leading 7-6 at the half, Rypien connected with Ricky Sanders from 30 yards, and then Ricky Ervins on a 24-yard beautifully-executed screen pass for a 21-6 lead. Chip Lohmiller than added four-quarter field goals from 35 yards as Washington outscored the Rams 20-0 in the second half. Rypien finished 15-24 for 269 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The former Washington State Cougar completed passes to six receivers. Gary Clark led Washington with four receptions, while Art Monk and Earnest Byner each had three. Linebacker Monte Coleman and defensive end Charles Mann both recorded 1.5 sacks, and linebacker Wilbur Marshall achieved a strip fumble or Rams wide receiver Flipper Anderson. Brian Mitchell returned three punts for 66 yards, and the Washington margin of victory could have easily been more impressive. However, the normally accurate Lohmiller only connected on two of his five field goal attempts. Email Sign up Like this article?
