After a year away from football, former Washington head coach Jay Gruden could be returning to the sidelines. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Gruden interviewed with the Carolina Panthers Thursday for their vacant offensive coordinator position. - It’s Gruden’s second interview with Carolina head coach Matt Rhule, this time, it was an in-person interview. He is the second known candidate to reach a second interview with the Panthers. Indianapolis Colts running backs coach Scottie Montgomery has also been interviewed twice. - - The #Panthers are interviewing former Washington HC Jay Gruden for their vacant OC job today, sources say. This is in-person, his second time interviewing with coach Matt Rhule. Gruden has been OC with the #Bengals and most recently with the #Jaguars. - — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 20, 2022 - - - Gruden was fired in Oct. 2019 after Washington started 0-5. In his five-plus seasons in Washington, Gruden recorded a record of 35-49-1. Gruden led Washington to one NFC East title, impressive considering he never truly had the chance to pick out his own quarterback. - After being fired in Washington, Gruden joined the Jacksonville Jaguars as offensive coordinator in 2020, but head coach Doug Marrone was fired after a 1-15 season, leaving Gruden without a job. - Gruden had talked about getting into the media, even trying out for networks as an analyst, but has maintained he always wanted to get back into coaching. - If Gruden lands in Carolina, he will enter a situation similar to one he had in Washington. The Panthers currently have no quarterback of the future but do own the No. 6 overall pick. The Panthers have running back Christian McCaffrey and a talented group of wide receivers. -   - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Washington Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Washington Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
