So much talk involves the Washington Football Team obtaining a franchise quarterback in this 2022 offseason. - Mock drafts are already being read and searched online daily in interest to whom Washington might draft with the 11th selection in round one of the upcoming NFL draft, April 28. - Whom will Washington trade for or sign in the next couple of months? Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Jimmy Garoppolo, Teddy Bridgewater, Davis Mills, Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield, Daniel Jones, Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor, Cam Newton, Marcus Mariota, Drew Lock and Geno Smith. - Yes, I have either read or heard EVERYONE of those names mentioned as possibilities for Washington to obtain in this offseason as either a franchise or bridge quarterback. - One name being overlooked most often now is actually Taylor Heinicke. Heinicke came into the 2021 season as the backup as the team front office and coaching staff planned on veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick leading the WFT to the playoffs. - Fitz didn’t make it one half of one game, and that was most unfortunate. Heinicke was 7-8 in the 15 games he started. He did complete 65 percent of his passes (321-494) for 20 touchdowns but also 15 interceptions. His 6.9 yards per attempt does leave much to be desired. - It is altogether possible the WFT will swing big this offseason, but what if the two parties talking trade or a free-agent signing, cannot agree upon compensation? What if Washington then determines to draft a quarterback in round one of the 2022 NFL draft? - That could mean Taylor Heinicke as the starter for the Burgundy and Gold Week 1. How many weeks, would he then start? How quickly would the drafted quarterback be expected to start? - What teams drafting in the top ten spots also need a quarterback? Which teams needing a quarterback might move ahead of the No. 11 spot and take the quarterback they like? - Most “franchise” quarterbacks are drafted in the first round. Whether No. 11 overall will be early enough remains to be seen. And that means Taylor Heinicke might be playing much more next season. - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Washington Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Washington Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
