Two weeks ago we began preliminary discussions concerning who were the most disappointing Washington players in 2021. Today we continue the countdown of the top five. - No. 4 Chase Young - Disappointing implies unmet expectations and it cannot be avoided that Chase Young experienced a notably disappointing 2021 season. A year earlier when Young came into the NFL in 2020 he gathered 7.5 QB sacks, 10 tackles for a loss and 12 QB hits. - Young in 2020 also defended four passes, recovered three fumbles, returning one fumble for a touchdown against the 49ers. As a result, Young was voted the AP defensive rookie of the year. This video displays Young’s impact throughout 2020. - - .@BaldyNFL breaks down what he loves about Chase Young’s game. pic.twitter.com/9Lro6TO8Bh - — NFL (@NFL) April 3, 2021 - - - Young was rewarded, becoming a captain in the offseason. Yet when OTA’s began in June, 86 players reported but not one of their captains, Chase Young. Apparently, Young had scheduled additional money-making opportunities with eBay, Under Armour, Beats and Celebrity Family Feud, and considered them more important on his list of priorities. - During training camp, Montez Sweat reported that he and Young had been discussing frequently, how they were going to set NFL sacks records. “I personally want to go get the combined sack record that the guys got back before. We talk about it all the time,” declared Sweat. - When the season began under much hype and excitement regarding the defense, Young’s impact was down, noticeably down. Fans hoped it was merely an oddity that would quickly resolve itself, but it did not. - The considerably reduced production continued into the ninth game. Though Young started all of those nine games he had collected a mere four QB Hits and 1.5 sacks. His season totals recorded were 15 solo tackles,11 assists and three tackles for a loss. The news got even worse for Young, when in this 9th game, against Tampa Bay, he tore an ACL and was lost for the remainder of the 2021 season. - The second overall selection of the 2020 NFL draft simply could not be omitted from this list of most disappointing Washington players for 2021. In fact, had Young not been injured and continued to produce as little as he did, he would have been higher on the list. - Having attended the game at Green Bay, I recently re-watched Young in the film of that game. He seemed to have no impact in a majority of the plays, finishing with no tackles for a loss, not a single QB hit, not a single solo tackle. Fortunately, he did get in on two assists. - Young has exhibited tremendous mobility and athleticism in his first two seasons, but 2021 simply failed to produce profitable results. - I certainly wish Young a speedy and healthy recovery, in hopes he regains strength from his ACL injury. Alex Smith was the NFL 2020 comeback player of the year, and Washington fans would love for Young to have such a year he would garner that award for 2022. - - - - - - - - - - - - Email - - - - - Sign up - - - - - - - - Like this article? - Sign up for the Washington Wire email newsletter to get our top stories in your inbox every morning - - - - An error has occured - - - Please re-enter your email address. - - - - - - Thanks for signing up! - - - You'll now receive the top Washington Wire stories each day directly in your inbox.
