Metropolitan Basketball League (MBL)

In January of 1922, the Metropolitan Basketball League was formed in New York City. Composed of six of the strongest independent clubs in and around the city, the new league was an immediate success. Two Brooklyn-based teams included Dodgers' 21 year old Joe Brennan finished second in the individual scoring race and would be part of the history of professional basketball throughout the next decade.
By 1927-28, Under the pressure from the ABL, the Metropolitan Basketball League struggled to revitalize its organization by expanding outside the New York City area with former New York State League teams such as Albany, Kingston and Troy. In early January, the league was staggered by the loss of its strongest franchise when the Brooklyn Visitation joined the ABL. The Metropolitan League kept going for two more weeks and then folded.
