Alex Smith is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons. He was born on May 7, 1984, in Bremerton, Washington, and attended the University of Utah, where he played college football for the Utah Utes.

Smith was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent eight seasons with the 49ers, during which he led the team to two NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance. In 2012, he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.

In 2013, Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he spent the next five seasons. He led the Chiefs to four playoff appearances and was named to the Pro Bowl twice during his time in Kansas City.

In 2018, Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins. He suffered a devastating leg injury in a game against the Houston Texans later that year, which forced him to miss the entire 2019 season. Despite his injury, Smith was able to make a remarkable comeback in 2020 and played in eight games for the Redskins, helping the team to win the NFC East division title.

Throughout his career, Smith was known for his intelligence, accuracy, and ability to read defenses. He was also respected for his toughness and resilience, particularly in the face of adversity. In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Smith was also known for his philanthropic work, including his support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Alex Smith Foundation, which provides resources and opportunities to foster youth.

In April 2021, Smith announced his retirement from the NFL after 16 seasons. He finishes his career with 199 touchdown passes, 109 interceptions, and over 34,000 passing yards. He also leaves a lasting legacy as a leader and role model both on and off the field.
