Kuharich began his career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1981, where he worked in the player personnel department. During his time with the Eagles, Kuharich was instrumental in building a team that made the playoffs four times in five years.
In 1993, Kuharich moved to the New Orleans Saints, where he was appointed as the Director of Pro Personnel. His success in this role led to his promotion to Vice President of Football Operations in 1994, and eventually to General Manager in 1996. As General Manager, Kuharich was responsible for all football-related decisions, including player acquisitions, contract negotiations, and overseeing the coaching staff.
Under Kuharich's leadership, the Saints made several notable player acquisitions, including Hall of Fame offensive lineman Willie Roaf and Pro Bowl quarterback Aaron Brooks. Despite these successes, the team struggled to achieve consistent success on the field, and Kuharich was relieved of his duties in 1999.
After leaving the Saints, Kuharich served as a consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2000 to 2006, where he assisted with player evaluations and draft preparations. He then returned to the Saints in 2006 as a consultant, before being promoted to Vice President of Player Personnel in 2008. In this role, Kuharich was responsible for overseeing the team's scouting department and player evaluations.
