Cam Ward is a former professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for 14 seasons. He was born on February 29, 1984, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Ward began his hockey career playing for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League (WHL) from 2001 to 2004. He was then drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round, 25th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
Ward made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in the 2005-2006 season and quickly became a key player for the team. He helped lead the Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history that same season, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. Ward's performance in the playoffs was outstanding, as he recorded a 15-8 record with a 2.14 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
Over the course of his career, Ward played in 701 NHL games, all but 12 of them with the Hurricanes. He finished with a record of 334-256-88, a 2.74 goals against average, and a .908 save percentage.
