Chauncey Billups

Biography

Chauncey Billups is a retired American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 17 seasons. He was born on September 25, 1976, in Denver, Colorado, and grew up in the Park Hill neighborhood. Billups attended the University of Colorado, where he played college basketball for two seasons before being drafted into the NBA.

Billups was selected third overall in the 1997 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. He played for several teams during his career, including the Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Clippers, and the Detroit Pistons again. He was known for his leadership, clutch shooting, and defensive skills.

Billups won the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2004 when he led the Detroit Pistons to the championship. He was also a five-time NBA All-Star, a three-time All-NBA selection, and a two-time All-Defensive team selection. He finished his career with averages of 15.2 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game.

Billups was known as "Mr. Big Shot" for his ability to make clutch shots in important moments of games. He was also a respected leader on and off the court, serving as the president of the NBA Players Association from 2013 to 2014.

In addition to his NBA career, Billups also played for the United States men's national basketball team. He won a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and a bronze medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

After retiring from playing, Billups became a basketball analyst for ESPN and NBA TV. He also served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers before being hired as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers in 2021.
