The City of San Diego has a long and rich history of professional sports and venues. It began in 1914 when the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League were established. The Padres were the first professional baseball team in the city and played at Lane Field until 1936. The Padres were followed by the San Diego Rockets of the American Basketball Association in 1967. The Rockets played at the San Diego Sports Arena until they moved to Houston in 1971.

In 1969, the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League moved to the city and played at San Diego Stadium until 2003. The Chargers were followed by the San Diego Clippers of the National Basketball Association in 1978. The Clippers played at the San Diego Sports Arena until 1984 when they moved to Los Angeles.

In 1981, the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball moved to the city and played at Jack Murphy Stadium until 2003. The Padres were followed by the San Diego Gulls of the International Hockey League in 1990. The Gulls played at the San Diego Sports Arena until 1995 when they moved to Long Beach.

In 1997, the San Diego Padres moved to Petco Park and the San Diego Chargers moved to Qualcomm Stadium. The San Diego Gulls returned to the city in 1995 and played at the San Diego Sports Arena until 2004 when they moved to Anaheim.
