Dietrick was a standout player in college, playing for the University of Oregon. He was a two-time All-American and was named the Pacific-8 Conference Player of the Year in 1971. He was also a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic basketball team.
Dietrick was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1973 NBA Draft. He played for the Blazers for four seasons, averaging 14.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He was traded to the San Diego Clippers in 1977 and played for them for two seasons. He then played for the Seattle SuperSonics for two seasons before retiring in 1983.
