Evans began his career in baseball in 1981 with the Chicago White Sox, where he worked in various capacities for 16 years. He started as an intern and worked his way up to become the team's Director of Baseball Operations. During his time with the White Sox, Evans was instrumental in the development of the team's player development system and was involved in all aspects of the team's baseball operations.
In 1999, Evans joined the Chicago Cubs as the team's Director of Scouting and Player Development. He was responsible for overseeing the team's scouting and player development departments, and his work helped to build a strong foundation for the team's future success.
In 2001, Evans was appointed as the General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. During his tenure, he was responsible for all aspects of the team's baseball operations, including player acquisitions, contract negotiations, and player development. Evans made several key acquisitions that helped to improve the team's performance, including signing All-Star outfielder Brian Jordan and acquiring pitcher Odalis Perez.
Evans also made significant improvements to the Dodgers' player development system, investing heavily in the team's minor league system and international scouting efforts.
